Who is it for

This course is suitable for graduate civil engineers from designer, contractor and client organisations as well as construction graduates, assistant project managers, junior site engineers and site managers.

What is it about

This one day course has been specifically designed to build ability, knowledge and awareness of the key elements of cost and budgets on construction projects. It will give you the ability to prepare and control budgets, and equip you with the tools and understanding to work effectively and manage costs within your projects commercial framework.

On time and within budget is a fundamental aim of all construction projects; one of the challenges young engineers face is defining a realistic project budget. A further challenge is then living within that budget. In ever increasing competition, engineers need to demonstrate that they understand the commercial aspects as well as the technical ones and defining and delivering projects within budget is a key attribute.

During the course you will address three broad themes that underpin project cost:

  • The project budget - What is the project budget and how does it compare to the final cost
  • Cost estimating - How do we develop an estimate of the cost - and does this differ between client, designer and contractor
  • Risk and value - How are risk and value incorporated into the budget
Set against a background of estimating in the construction industry you will explore the elements of project cost and how budgets are established. Working from first principles, cost build up and bills of quantities will be developed and tested using case studies. Contractor tender pricing processes and the effects of risk, value and decision making on project costs will be explored.

The tutor is a Chartered Civil Engineer and experienced project manager. He has extensive experience of project and programme management for private and public bodies and has successfully delivered construction projects at all levels. His in-depth knowledge of what works in practice has proved invaluable in developing and delivering effective cost, value and risk based training across the industry.
